Even by those who list 'good health' at the top of their priorities. More often than not they take no account of the long-term effects of life-style upon their bodies, so intent are the they on go-getting , climbing the ladder of success, winning friends and influencing people- or simply keeping their heads above water.
Their only concession to their number one priority is pull-guzzling when they get sick.
A healthy, balanced diet is of the essence. And remember: if it doesn't make you sweat, it's not exercise.
Remember too the World Health Organization's definition of health:
'Health is a state of complete physical, mental, social and spiritual well-being; not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.'
Dysfunction in the physical component is comparatively easily recognized and diagnosed. Much attention and mountains of cash are spent on keeping physically well, or in regaining physical wellness if - in regard to any of a thousand and one causes, real or imagined - it is believed to be lost.
Nevertheless, despite the example of their fellows and the amount of advice and information available the frenetic life-style of many still often results in an irremediable physical dysfunction before they have regulated their life-style to meet physical limitations.
Not recognizing the interrelationship between the social, intellectual and spiritual, and the physical, the demands of life-style and appetite have not been modified to accommodate the body's ability to cope.
However, health-consciousness is on the increase, as is, in a vague form, the belief that other areas of being - especially morale, sense of optimism, self-confidence, intellectual fulfilment, stability of personality, spiritual peace - impinge upon the physical.
But these other areas, where disability is less easily diagnosed, are still, to an alarming extent, left to the province of the quack.
