What is one thing you just don't understand?
Paintings.
And why people spend millions of dollars on them.
Why is this painting worth $250 million? I have seen tons of other paintings like these in a local art store, why are those worth 50 bucks? How is this any different from them?

The three paintings above look almost the same to me. And in my opinion, the 2nd one is the prettiest, I'd buy that one if I had to pick between these 3. However the second one is worth $62, and the other two are worth millions.
$186 million.
Why is this..? You get my point.
I don't think I'll ever understand paintings. I wish I could though, I've tried reading about it, but I don't think you can understand art by reading. It just comes to you. And in that case, my opinions about art definitely suck as far as the painters around the world are concerned.

That’s true, but the image itself isn’t the point. Let me give you an analogy.
This:
Is the original US Declaration of Independence. It’s literally priceless, in that the nation wouldn’t sell it at any price. An early print of this, in good shape, recently sold for over $2 million.

I get your point. But this may not be a complete or accurate comparison. This is not art. The value exists because 270 out of 300 million Americans would hold the declaration to be a matter of pride and will consider it an insult to their nation if it was ever put on the market for sale and will try to outbid any one who decided to take a go at it. A document representing an important moment in the history of a nation is priceless. A simple painting created by one guy which can loose all its value,if a single drop of water fell or moisture content in the room is not perfect, it has no real value.
